Breast Cancer: The Black Disadvantage
The five-year survival rate for breast cancer patients in the United States exceeds 85 percent, in Nigeria it is a dismal 10 percent;
As of 2014, Black women are 43% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women.
If a woman has successfully gone through cancer treatment and is in remission…she should not attempt to get pregnant again, because that increases the likelihood of the cancer returning….with a vengeance.
Black Women and Breast Cancer:
The Harsh Realities
Black women have a 1 in 9 chance of developing breast cancer; for white women the odds are 1 in 8, according to the American Cancer Society. But black women are more likely to die from the disease: White women's probability of dying from breast cancer is 1 in 37, while black women's is 1 in 31.
Breast Cancer in Blacks
•Diagnosed earlier
•More aggressive
•Harder to treat
•Die at an earlier age/more quickly
•Greater relapse rates (especially when they get pregnant)
